Art covers different types, but there are 3 categories and those are: Visual Art, Applied Art and Performing Arts.
Visual Art:
Applied Art:
Performing Art:
1. Photography is a way of capturing moments. It takes half-second to take a picture and a lifetime to hold on to it and remember it for a long time. I believe each photograph is a memory and I also believe that photographs have secrets. Photographs also show expressions such as sadness, happiness or even shock.
Diane Arbus: ‘A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less
you know’

If I would choose photography as my main theme, I could make a documentary on how photography shows the details we don’t see in real life, or we don’t bother to look. I could ask a photography student how he finds the best details and other questions about his work as a photographer. I could also ask him/her to come with me to a place where you can find even the smallest detail and I would film him/her in action, doing his/her job as a photographer. Then I could also film him to show the audience the process after taking photos. He/she could also tell how to achieve the best photographs and the tricks to taking them.
Feedback
Sila: I really like the idea because it will be interesting to watch and see how we miss little details unlike the photographers. I think that it will also be a documentary that the audience can learn from. I think it would be a good theme to work on.
2. Sculpting means to shape something which is done with 4 steps: carving, modelling, casting, constructing. If I were to make a film about sculpting, I would make a mystery film in which a person gets home and finds a small sculpture with a thing he cares about and over the next few days he keeps finding these small sculpted objects and it makes no sense, but then when he receives a small note with a riddle, he puts all the pieces together in his mind and finds what this whole thing is about.
The boy finds out the person who’s been giving him the sculpted objects (that person being his granddad), but it doesn’t make any sense as his granddad has been dead for almost 2 years. However, he then finds out that his granddad has left behind these small sculpted objects because he knew how meaningful these objects were for him and the granddad knew his time was short and wanted to leave something behind for the boy.
Probably not going to choose this theme for my final project as I don’t know anyone who could provide these sculpted objects for me, and if I don’t have anything sculpted, for the sake of this theme, I can’t make it my main theme.
Feedback:
Alexandra: Good idea of a film, but if you don’t have much time to finish the project I wouldn’t suggest it because you’ll need to actually find the sculpted objects or someone to do it for you.
3. Another type of art is drawing. Drawing is a visual form of art in which people mark papers. If I would make a film with this theme, it would be about someone who expresses himself/herself through paintings, like telling what they feel by drawings. I could have a girl who is really talented and does secret drawings and
then she hides them in a small storage in her art class.
This could also be a thriller film because someone would be her stalker and the stalker would expose her drawings by putting them everywhere in school for people to see. She sees this person as a stalker because she doesn’t know who that person is, or so she thinks.
Feedback
Hassan: I Like the idea and I think you Could also add a cliffhanger where the ‘stalker’ has good intentions of showing her drawings
4. Dance : ‘move rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps.’ I believe that for dancers, it is so much more as it allows them to express themselves, who they are, show the passion for dance and many other feelings. If I were to make a film about dance, I would like to show how much dancing means for a dancer and how sometimes life tests us with obstacles.
The film could be about a dancer ( i.e. boy) who struggles to keep dancing when his parents keep pressuring him into focusing on other things, such as school or other sports. The boy will have a full choreography by himself and I could film in the school theatre. If I get to film in there, I could make the film with the boy auditioning to get into a great school of dance, however he does this secretly. The film could also involve his parents finding about his passion for dance to add some dramatic events, for example the father does not agree with him doing ballet or focusing on other things other than football.. As I don’t know someone who dances that could take part in the film, I could ask some dance students from my college and see if anyone is interested.
Feedback
Djenaba: I think that this is a very interesting idea. I like the fact that it’s about a boy exploring his passions which aren’t generally recognised in a boy’s life. It’s an insight on breaking the gender roles. I think it could work as a drama film.
5. For many people, graffiti means spraying on a wall our own thoughts, so instead of saying it out loud we spray it. This is not included in painting because you do it on walls or streets and people usually do it because they want to send a message to the population. Many places are illegally sprayed, which is the reason some people don’t agree with graffiti. It is because some people consider that if graffiti will be aloud in most places, those who do graffiti will see it as an act of freedom where everyone does whatever they want to do because some people don’t use graffiti to show art, they do it to threaten other with violence. However, for those who want to express art there are places specially made for those such as this tunnel:
If I were to do my final project with graffiti being my main theme, I would make a film in which a powerful message is transmitted. It could be a film about a mess of graffiti, but a beautiful one where teenagers leave whatever is in their mind on a wall and at the end it will be a beautiful mess showing that teenagers are confusing and confused at the same time. The film could involve around 3 teenagers being undecided regarding what to do after their final exam and where they’ll head after.
This could be a possible theme I would consider because I could easily get sprays and here, in London, is a tunnel where graffiti is everywhere and is allowed, so if I would choose this theme I could go there and film.
Feedback:
Anissia: You could make a great film with graffiti, however there is one thing I would suggest: find a place where graffiti is allowed as you can’t do it everywhere in London
6. Architecture is the art of designing and constructing buildings. It is considered art because before staring building something, you have to design it and by designing it, you often draw it. (Drawing is not the only way to design something, but it is a possible way)
If I were to make a film about architecture, I would not necessarily have to build something in real life, as I can use some of the softwares on my computer to create it. The main idea could be about a maze where a person could possibly be hiding from someone or trying to find that person. I would probably not choose this theme as it is a bit complicated and the time is a quite short.
Feedback:
Roxana: I think that if you really want your project to be about architecture you can do it whether the time’s short or not. But overall the idea with the maze is quite nice.
7. Another type of art is conceptual art.
I think this theme is a quite interesting one as it shows that even the smallest things we consider meaningless show importance or have quite a interesting history. Most of the times, if there is a gallery of conceptual art objects will be out there and next to the object would be the real meaning of it or a little bit of interesting history.
If I would choose this theme, I would make a film in which a girl is visiting a museum with her friends and looking closely at a picture, she discovers that behind the picture some object is there and it looks like it’s pretty old. The object could be a busole which will lead the girl to a small hidden door where she finds a letter.
The letter could either be for someone who didn’t get the chance to read it and it was put there by someone hoping some day someone will find it, or it could be a paper with clues which will lead to something valuable.
Feedback:
Sara: I think this is an interesting idea and the part with the clues makes it more intense as it makes it mysterious.
8. Mosaic art is a form of decoration in which small coloured pieces of glass, marble or other materials are put together to create pictures or patterns. The history of art mentions that it the technique used to create mosaic art is using pebbles. It started with black pebbles and throughout the years coloured pebbles were added.
I would not choose this as the theme of my final project as it takes a lot of time to create mosaic art and I would need the glass and other materials such as the colour. Painting is not one of my strengths, so I won’t be able to create them myself which means I would have to find someone to do it for me and the time is limited right now. It also takes time to put all the pieces together to create the picture/pattern.
Feedback:
Ghada: I think that if you would choose this theme it would make it unique as not many people would choose to make a film about mosaic art, especially when you have such a short time.
9. Still life art is the subject of a still life painting or sculpture and it can be anything that does not move or is dead. In still life pictures, you would usually find normal objects, cut flowers, wine, vegetables, etc.
I don’t know anyone who creates still life art, and most probably I wouldn’t choose this theme as it is not really a thing I’m passionate about and even if I admire this type of art, it is only to the point where it is just admirations and not something I would choose to write about or research.
However, if I would’ve had the opportunity and the person to create some still life pictures/patterns, I would make a documentary on the process of developing a still life picture. I would film the person creating the picture and that person could take me throughout the process.
It does seem like this theme is basically painting, however I believe that the even that smallest difference matters to make it different and special and that is that when you want to create a still life picture, you have the object placed in front of you so you could paint it the same and make it as real as possible.
Feedback:
Alina: I think you underestimate what you can do because if you really like the idea you can do it even if you have a short time. Also you don’t need to know anyone who creates still life art as you can watch tutorials and make it happen with your own hands.
10. Calligraphy is something beautifully written. It was mostly used in the early days for writing letters. Personally, I don’t think I would choose this theme as I have themes that would be better for my final major project.
However, if calligraphy was my only choice to make a film about, I would make a documentary of when/why/how calligraphy was introduced. I could also get people to write something and show how everyone’s writing is different and some of them have the talent to write beautifully, like calligraphy.
Feedback:
John: I think calligraphy is an interesting idea to research about and if you choose to make your final project on it, I would like to see the beginning of calligraphy.
