1. For my first experiment I want to try out different angles. As my film is about dance, I will obviously need to film different angles to show details of moves for example.
This video is filmed from different angles and they are either close ups or it’s filmed from further away.
However, there is also the type of filming a choreography one time in which the videographer moves the camera so it syncs with the choreography and it all happens with one camera. For example the following choreography is filmed with one camera and it does not have the same close ups as the one above. Truly, it does go closer but it’s not filmed so it starts another shot, it continues with the same camera and while filming it goes closer.
For my experiment I will try to do both. The first time I will have the dancer doing the choreography and I will put the camera somewhere at the front so the dancer faces the camera. This will be the shot where I will film the whole choreography without moving. The following shot I will have the dancer doing the choreography and I will move around with the camera, whether I go closer or further away, and I will obviously film the further away shot from a different angle comparing with the one I filmed the first time.
Here the final experiment:
2. The second experiment I will aim to edit the film so the choreography fits well. For example, if I am filming twice the choreography, I am going to have to have to know where each move goes because I don’t want to change the choreography the dancers created. Also, the first time I am filming it will be the whole choreography from the front, so if I notice that something is different or does not fit, I will watch what I filmed there and put the shots together.
Here is the final experiment:
3. For the third experiment I will do come colour grading, where I will try to fix some of the lightning from the studio. That is because the lightning in the studio does not reflect on the dancer, unless I stand in front of the big window, which is the main source of light there, however since I am doing different angles I will have to film from the opposite direction and that is where the lightning of the film will get darker.
With colour grading, I will aim to make the light decent as in the face of the dancer is clear and visible.
Here is what it looks like without being edited at all:
Here is what it looks like after the colour has been changed:
4. The next experiment is the music, where along with the dancer for the respective type of dance (there will be 2 dancers), I will choose a song that will work best with their choreography. Mostly, it will be them choosing the song and I will tell them my opinion if the song fits the theme of the film. Since they are dancers they know better what type of dance will work best for the film.
For the experiment I will ask them what song they particularly used and why.
Faith: I chose the song ‘The coldest shoulder-126ers’ because as a choreographer I feel music is very important in displaying emotions and movement. For my character I feel this one shows the frustration this person is feeling.
Marshall: I chose ‘Franz Variation Coppelia Act 3 (Bolshoi version) because when I was younger I found a book in the library. The book contained many ballet stories and I flicked through it until skipping right to the last one. This was Coppelia, I would read it every time I visited the library, in secret, until the day I was able to watch it. I found a connection to Franz.
Here is an example why not every song fits a choreography:
Here is the final experiment ( 1:05) :
5. The fifth experiment will involve some transitions. Not every scene needs a transition, especially if it is a dance film. For example, if I would film a choreography and I decide that I want to film from different angles, I would not need to add a transition when I’m switching to another camera.
Here is an example, where I used a transition to show that the scene in the studio was finished. Also,I used the transition because I didn’t have anything other footage to replace it with.
6. For my sixth experiment I decided to make the text messages appear on the screen while the person reads it. Here is an example:
Even though this is a tutorial, I did not use it to create the text messages. The way I did it was to get a green screen video where it has some ‘boxes’ in which I could write the text messages.
Here is the final experiment:
7. For the seventh experiment I wanted to make the scrolling credits. The first thing I did to achieve it, was to create a Legacy Title and there I wrote the dancers’ name, music etc. Then I used key frames to make them scroll up. I positioned the credits in the middle because most of the credits from other films are also positioned in the middle.
8. Another experiment I tried to do was to fade out the music at the end of the first choreography. The reason why I wanted to do that was because the song chosen was longer than the choreography so I had to cut out the music. To do that I used the effect in ‘Audio Transitions’ in Premiere Pro which fades the audio.
For the fading transition: 2:40
9. For the ninth experiment, I tried to put 2 videos together to show that both actions happen in the same time.
What I did to achieve this experiment was to use the ‘Crop’ effect and then I went to Effect Controls. There, I changed the position so it fits half of the screen, but since I’m only going to need to see the person in the video I cropped the sides from both videos.
