For Unit 5, we had 4 tasks: write a 500 words essay analysing the psycho shower scene, write another 500 words essay analysing one video of our choice, the chocolate task and the 5 images task.
For the 500 words essay, in which we had to analyse the psycho shower scene, I started by watching the whole video to get an idea of what kind of sounds are in the video. In this essay, I wrote about the high pitched sounds and the music which I described as being intense as in you know something is going to happen and you can’t decide if it’s going to be as scary as you expect it to be.
The next task was to write another 500 words essay where we chose the video we were going to write about. For this essay, I chose a scene from the movie Whiplash, because I though the scene had a lot to write about such as the sudden stops and rhythm of the instruments and how relaxing they were. The scene was very repetitive with the sounds as the instruments were being played with the same rhythm, or at least that’s how they seemed to me. The instruments may have being played a bit more quicker some times, but it was not something very noticeable.
The chocolate task was the one where we had to make a table and while watching a video, which had no sounds, we had to write down the possible sounds we could create that would fit with the action. First thing we did, after we made the table, was to record the sounds. We decided to create the sounds in Pro Tools. There we opened the video and we recorded the following sounds: footsteps, punches, woman making high pitches sounds, someone being dragged, metal fallin and some sounds men do when they get hit.
This is an example of how we recorded one sound:
-footsteps: in which the woman runs towards the men and then they fight. We had one person from our group doing the footsteps by watching the video and when the sounds seemed to be louder than normal footsteps, the classmates would step harder so the loudness of the step would be increased.
The 5 Images task was to play around with some of the effects in Logic Pro, where we would have to add some effects to change the normal sound.
One of the 5 sounds turned out pretty basic and not so similar to an explosion. For this sound we had to record something to hat would sound like an explosion and I though it would be a good idea to record the sound of a fizzy drink being opened. I increased the loudness of the sound, however one thing I could have done better was to slow it down so it would be smoother and not so fast.
