What are dreams?
Dreams are images, sounds and sensations we experience when we sleep. Your dreams could include people you never heard of, people you know and people close to you.
There are so many interpretations of what dreams really mean. We’re all different, meaning we all have different thoughts when it comes to assuming things.
1. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about dreams is sleeping. At some point, every one has a dream. Some people dream very often and not one says that’s a bad thing. It means that you’re healthy and not tired.
Potential idea: As this is the most common thought when it comes to dreams, I could have made a film based on a dream where a character dreams about something related to one action that happened the day before in the life of the character. In more details, the character goes to school and at night, the character dreams that she/he is at school and weird things happen, such as few students are dressed weirdly. The students could all be dressed as rockstars, for example.
2. That leads me to the second type of dreams. Are nightmares dreams? Well, I think that as long as you dream, a nightmare is still part of dreaming. A nightmare means you’re overwhelmed by stress, anxiety or other things that are not included in a healthy lifestyle.
Psychology Today website:
Potential idea: The film could be about someone having a nightmare on something they know they’ve done wrong and still did it anyways, even if it makes them feel guilty. For example, there is a boy and he is pretending to be someone else on the internet to stalk someone. Then it kinda gets to him that the idea is a bad one and he then realises that he is doing something totally wrong. He starts seeing the idea as being a bad one by having a nightmare about him being discovered and kids at school start seeing him as a fake person and he becomes a loner and when he wakes up he realises that he needs to do the right thing.
3. Can you dream while you’re awake? Of course you can. To me, dreaming with you’re eyes open means ambition. This is called Daydreaming. It means you have a dream to get something you wish for, whether is a place or a thing you want. People have thousands of dreams and that is hope that someday what you wish for might come true.
Potential idea: For this type of dream, I could make a film on someone being good at something, such as dancing. I could have a girl wishing she could dance in front of other people. Then one day she imagines dancing in front of other people for a competition. I could film this inside the theatre at school where I could get my classmates to sit down and get a few shots where I film them looking with admiration at the girl dancing. Then I could ask someone from the Dance course at school and I could ask her to dance for a bit and make some moves to show that she’s dancing in front of other people and then, at the end, the girl realises that she’s only daydreaming because she believe that she’s never going to actually dance in front of a lot of people.
4. I personally believe that dreams are somehow related to the deja vu feeling. Everybody has experienced the deja vu, and in french it means ‘already seen’. However, even if it means that we’ve seen or felt the action before, we can’t seem to remember when it happened before that’s why I relate it to dreams, because I believe that we dream something and then it could take days, weeks or even years, but we feel that it happened before so I think that it was a dream but later on we experience it without even realising.
Potential idea: I could make a film about someone just walking and then getting the feeling that the exact same thing happened. And then, later on, the person gets home and then remembers about a dream she had a couple of days before and as she thinks more of the dream, she gets images of the exact same things that have happened earlier.
5. Another type of dream is the lucid dream. Lucid dreams seem to be rare.
This is the type of dream where someone dreams and while doing it, the person is aware of dreaming. Cool huh? What is even cooler is that dreamers can sometimes change their dreams, like change the characters or the environment.
Potential idea: I could make a film about a boy sleeping and the next thing he know is that is is somewhere in a dark room and he’s aware that he’s dreaming, however he doesn’t know how to wake up. And then he sees a piece of paper, so it will be like a game. To wake up he needs to solve the riddle.
6. The meaning of prophetic dreams is that while we sleep, we can see the future. Not many people believe in them because they don’t happen that often. We can only determine prophetic dreams when what we dreamed about happens in real life.
Potential idea: I could make a film about someone just simply walking and then some actions happen, such as a red car passes by and then a boy crosses the street and then out of nowhere the red car explodes. I can create the explosion in After Effects. And then I would film that person in the same position where it all started and then slowly things that she saw, start happening and she realises it is going to happen if she doesn’t do something. Obviously, if I’m going to pick this them, I’m going to develop it more and make it a better film.
7. Apparently, problem-solving dreams are a real thing. These are supposed to invade your dream and leave you a message on how to solve things in real life. However, these can be tricky as in we have to figure out the message by ourselves. You didn’t think you could just sleep and the next day all your problems will be solved because you had a dream, did you? These problem-solving dreams are supposed to be a road to solving your problems, so you’re probably looking at having a few dreams about it till you realise the right thing to do to overcome your problems, but who knows?
Potential idea: So there is this boy who’s found a piece of paper on the streets and on the paper is written a riddle from someone who’s saying goodbye. So this boy doesn’t know who the person saying goodbye is, but after a few dreams where he gets small clues, he finds out the person is going to be at some lake and then he discovers that the person is someone he knows.
8. Recurring dreams have also been identified as dreams and the definition is pretty much the word ‘recurring’. It means that dreams repeat themselves over days, weeks, months or even years. Usually, if you dream the same thing over and over again, you probably experienced a traumatic event from where you got left a mark and you dream the same thing every night.
Potential idea: This film could be about someone dreaming about their friend coming every night into his dreams and telling him the same phrase. So it is like a traumatic event, where the boy has lost his friend and now the dead friend comes every night to tell him the very last thing he said before he died.
9. Life changing dreams are dreams that show you an event or make you meet someone that will change your life. That means that in your dream you may meet someone you wouldn’t expect and something life changing will happen, like open your eyes to fix things that didn’t go well in the past.
Potential idea: I could make a film about a girl meeting an old lady, who tells the girl about her life, so it will be like an inspirational story that will make the girl realise that there is so much more for her out there and not to limit herself with little. However, people in town believe that this lady is unstable so it will make the girl choose between believing in what people say and take the old lady as an example of life.
10. And the last type of dreams, but not the least, is visitations. This is a pretty interesting one as it means that whilst dreaming, we get visited by our loved ones that passed away. Personally, I think this is a good way of seeing the ones you lost and talk to them and tell them how much you miss them (even if they probably know it already ), but some people don’t understand that it’s just a dream, and they may never move on with their lives.
Potential idea: The last idea of a film could be about a girl who’s been left by her best friends with few years back and recently, this girl finds out that her best friend is dead. And then one day, the girl is reading in a park and suddenly the atmosphere changes and when the girl notices, she sees her best friend coming towards her. Then, the best friend explains why she left without saying anything or goodbye and then she make a promise to leave the town because the best friend tells her that if she’s not going to leave the town, she’ll always wonder what else is outside of that town and she’ll be left with regrets.
